LINK OF THE DAY - 2014-10-21

Late last week, the goodly Mr. Doug Hoyer dropped a new EP of heavier, rockier tunes that didn’t quite fit sonically with his most recent long player. The four song, limited-run (cassette and Bandcamp) release is called Blood Döner. Check it out.

New Doug Hoyer music video, y’all: “The One For Me” from To Be a River.

By a coincidental fluke, this same Doug Hoyer track appears (along with many other fantastic tunes) in August Deco Kino Radio podcast.

Always good work from that Mr. Doug.

This is to be a wild weekend of live music around every corner in Edmonton. Many terrific artists are working hard to deserve your attention, to rise above a feverish din, and to deliver fantastic performances.

Yesterday was the kick-off of the new Bermuda Music Festival, which continues August 1-5 in Edmonton, at various Whyte Avenue venues. There are also exciting shows north of the river, as well as several other festivals beyond the limits of the city.

Here are the ones we’re fixing to investigate…

Live at the Starlite Room - Drake’s Theory / Her Alibi / Kay There House Builder

If you’re into technically impressive, epic-chops music, you could do far worse than giving Drake’s Theory your time. Proceeds from ticket sales are being donated to new immigrant Filipino families in need.

10:00PM ($10) - Drake’s Theory / Kay There House Builder / Her Alibi

Bermuda Music Festival continues at Wunderbar with two shows.

It’s the 16th anniversary of the date which led to Judgement Day, as predicted in the film Terminator 2. “System goes online August fourth, 1997.”

It’s also the one-year anniversary of the release of Deco Kino Radio’s 2011 ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Barn Burner, by The Give ‘Em Hell Boys.

8:00PM ($5) Jay Sparrow / The Give ‘Em Hell Boys - “To Celebrate we’ll be giving away free downloads to the first 30 people through the door at On The Rocks Edmonton on Sunday!

There will also be another terrific Bermuda show (unfortunately, it’s also at 8:00PM), featuring recent Deco Kino Radio-guests Ghost Cousin. If we can swing it, we’re going to try to hit both shows. (Ghost Cousin will also have a CD release party later this month.)

8:00PM ($15) George Ireland and the Willie Nillies / Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers / Ghost Cousin / Marlaena Moore

And if you have any energy left by Monday, the Bermuda Festival concludes with a FREE afternoon event at the Empress Ale House

3:00PM (free) - Jessica Jalbert / Cam Boyce / Dustin Lambert.

The great Doug Hoyer has released a music video for “One Foot” - the single from his great new disc To Be a River - featuring the Good Women Dance Collective performing alongside the singer-songwriter.

Check out the video!

"One Foot" is one of Hoyer’s strongest tracks, and is without question in the running for our favorite song of 2013.
